Medical visa for India: how to apply and what you need
A summary from the Government of India's official portal, so you know from the start which visa fits your passport. Approval and timing always rest with the Indian authorities; we help with the hospital letter and preparation.
We checked this information on the official portal on 13 October 2026. Rules can change, so confirm them before you apply.
On this page
Two kinds of medical visa
e-Medical Visa (online)
You apply on the official portal and receive the approval (ETA) by email. Only for certain nationalities.
Regular Medical Visa
If your passport is not on the e-Visa list, you fill in the form online and submit it with your documents at the Indian embassy or consulate in your country.
Medical Attendant Visa
For the people travelling with the patient. The official portal allows at most two e-Medical Attendant visas per patient.
Check the right route for your passport
Eligibility depends on passport nationality, not country of residence. Check the official nationality list and e-Visa conditions when applying. If they do not apply to you, check the regular visa route with the relevant Indian mission.
Documents for the e-Medical Visa
- Passport valid for at least six months at the time of application, with at least two blank pages
- A recent photo on a white background (JPEG, square, 10 KB to 1 MB)
- A scan of the passport bio page (PDF, 10 KB to 300 KB)
- A letter from the hospital in India on its letterhead with the patient's name, nationality, passport number and the tentative admission date. We coordinate this letter with the hospital
- A return or onward ticket and enough money for your stay
Attendants need their passport and bio page, and link their application to the patient's visa.
Timing and fees
- Apply at least four days before arrival, and no more than 120 days ahead
- Fees depend on nationality and are not refunded if the application is refused
- The official portal states there is no official express or extra fee, so be careful with sites asking for more
- Approved? Print the ETA, carry it with you, and complete the online e-Arrival card within 72 hours before you arrive
How long the visa lasts
Your permitted stay, number of entries and extension conditions depend on your visa category and official approval. Check that they fit your treatment plan before travelling; do not rely on a general duration quoted by another website.
Arrival
e-Visa holders enter through designated airports, including Delhi International Airport, the closest to hospitals in Delhi and Gurgaon.
Be careful
- Apply only on the official portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in
- If you have a military, security or police background (serving or retired) or hold an official or diplomatic passport, the e-Visa is not available; apply for a regular visa
- Everyone needs their own passport and application, children included
